How to Live on a Budget

Living on a budget is hard, and for many people in life it is the only way to survive from day-to-day, and from pay packet to pay packet. There are many people in the UK reliant on payday loans to get through the month in order to buy essentials or to pay for emergency repairs and maintenance issues, and there are many vulnerable people in greater need of support from benefits such as Universal Credit. Learning how to live on a budget is a priority for all people, even if you are comfortable financially in the current moment and have full-time employment. Things can quickly change for even the most financially secure person, so it is important to learn the skills of living on a budget as early in your adult life as possible.

The first thing you should do when preparing to live on a budget is to work out your budget down to the finest detail. There are plenty of online budget planners that you can use to assist you with this if necessary, but it can be as simple as getting out a pen and a pad of paper and working out exactly how much money you have coming in, and exactly how much money is going out each month.

Write down each bill that you have to pay and the date that you pay it. This should include your rent or mortgage, electricity and gas, phone and broadband, mobile phone, TV license, water etc. On top of that list any outstanding loans or lines of credit that you are currently paying off (and include a greater total and timescale for those debts).

Once you have done this it can be much easier to see exactly how much money you have left over every month to go towards essentials, such as your groceries and clothing. You can also see whether you are currently living within your means and whether your budget leaves you vulnerable in the long-term.

Look at ways in which you can realistically cut your costs. Use price comparison websites to see if you can get better deals on your utilities and broadband, investigate whether you have a realistic chance of being successful in an application for certain benefits, and start to live under your new budget. It is always difficult to start with, but it is important to learn about when you can treat yourself or your family with treats, and when you should focus on saving, paying down debts, and paying for purely essentials.

There are always options open to you when you are living on a budget. Every person has a unique story to tell, and whereas some people might have some savings behind them or a family member with spare cash to help tide them over, others might require the assistance of a payday loan in tight circumstances.

Before committing to a payday loan or other form of credit however, it is vital that you understand the implications, and your legal responsibilities in terms of repaying the loan under the agreed timeframe and consistency. The true cost of payday loans can be difficult to fathom in some cases, so ensure you have found a responsible and reputable payday loan lender that won’t just place you in greater financial difficulty, and one that allows you the flexibility to improve your life without worrying about making your money worries worse in the end.
